The Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International located in Orlando, FL at the College of Law campus. Phi Alpha Delta was established on November 8, 1902. It is the largest co-ed professional law fraternity in the United States. Approximately one out of six attorneys are a member of Phi Alpha Delta. PAD was the first law fraternity to admit members of all races, creeds, colors, religions and national origins. Phi Alpha Delta became the first law fraternity to admit women in September 1970. The Cherry Chapter was established in 2005 and named after Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, an African American female attorney. She attended Florida A&M University, where she received her undergraduate degree and later, her Juris Doctorate. She taught in the Miami Public Schools for more than 20 years, and she also served as a law professor at Florida A&M University. She was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1965, and she became the first African-American woman to practice law in Dade County.
