The Hematology/Oncology Interest Group (HOIG) at Florida Atlantic University aims to foster student interest in the fields of hematology and oncology by providing educational opportunities, professional development, and hands-on experiences. Our mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of blood disorders, cancer pathophysiology, and advancements in treatment through collaboration with faculty, physicians, and researchers. To achieve this, we organize lectures, case discussions, and panels featuring experts in hematology and oncology to enhance students’ knowledge of these specialties. We strive to facilitate clinical exposure through shadowing opportunities, hospital rounds, and mentorship programs with practicing physicians. Additionally, we encourage student involvement in research projects, journal clubs, and presentations focused on hematologic and oncologic conditions. Beyond academics, we engage in community outreach initiatives such as blood donation drives, cancer awareness campaigns, and volunteer activities to support patients and their families. Lastly, we provide career development resources, including information on residency programs, networking events, and professional workshops, to guide students interested in pursuing careers in hematology/oncology. Through these efforts, the HOIG strives to inspire and equip future physicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to the field.
