Why this Event Matters: Protecting Our Campus and Our Environment Keeping our stormwater system free from debris also prevents flooding and makes our campus more resilient. Hey, what do you mean by Stormwater?! What’s that got to do with litter? Stormwater is rainwater that runs off roofs, roads, and other surfaces and can carry litter and pollutants directly into nearby waterways if not properly managed. You see, litter isn’t just an eyesore—it’s a serious environmental threat. Most litter, especially plastic, doesn’t break down naturally. Instead, it fragments into microplastics that pollute our soil and water, harming wildlife and ecosystems. At FGCU, we’re part of a regional watershed that flows into the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve and eventually the Gulf waters. That means every piece of litter on campus has the potential to travel downstream, affecting marine life, water quality, and even our local communities. By cleaning up litter and collecting data through the Litterati app, we’re not just tidying up— we’re identifying patterns, raising awareness, and helping prevent pollution at its source. Your participation helps make FGCU a cleaner, safer, and more resilient place for everyone. Using the Litterati App In the app, take a photo of litter where you find it Tag it (object, material, brand) Properly dispose of the litter Helpful Resources Learn more about Litterati https://www.litterati.org/ Watch the TED Talk https://www.ted.com/talks/jeff_kirschner_this_app_makes_it_fun_to_pick_up_litter?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare From Sunday, October 18, 2026 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM EDT at EHS MOD .
