From a single building on what once was an abandoned airfield in southwest Miami-Dade County, plans were crafted in 1969 for the formation of what would become one of the largest universities in the country. Because of these unlikely beginnings, Florida International University has established itself as an anchor institution in South Florida by solving some of the greatest challenges of our time. FIU is dedicated to enriching the lives of the local and global community. Such organizational greatness is the result of the decades-long devotion of many devoted individuals. In 2003, a group of Panthers sought to establish a high honor that would pay homage to the work of the institution’s greatest contributors – past, present, and future. The Order of the Torch is comprised of students, faculty, administrators/staff, alumni, and other devotees who have distinguished themselves as contributors to the greater university community and remain vested in the continued development and enhancement of FIU.
