What is sustainability? The concept of sustainable development was first defined by the United Nations in the report, Our Common Future (1987), "Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." (Page 41) Everyone has a different understanding of sustainability, and can effect sustainable change in various ways. At Sustainable Campus, it is not about remembering a textbook definition, but rather embracing sustainability into your way of life and learning new ways to make a positive impact. This allows sustainability to be approachable for each individual to find their own passion and connection to sustainability. We introduce the three pillars of sustainability to the FSU community: environmental, economic, and social justice-all of which are needed equally to be truly sustainable. The environmental pillar focuses on renewable energy, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and reducing deforestation. Economic focuses on long term growth, that is using resources in a healthy balance with the ecosystem and via sustainable methods. The social pillar focuses on equity and who has access to the resources, so that one group of people is not unfairly burdened at the benefit of another. By focusing on all three aspects, we transcend the environmentalism movement into a holistic way of life that focuses on equity, justice, and inclusion. Sustainability is a living definition, meaning it is expanding and new ideas are incorporated into how we approach, talk about, and achieve sustainability. What is a sustainable cam
