The Community Action Network (CAN) connects University of Florida students with local community issues and efforts to address them. Broadly, it aims to benefit the community through service and the student body through meaningful experiences. CAN operates with two complementary missions: (1) to engage students in solving our community’s most pressing issues today, and (2) to prepare them to take on the challenges of tomorrow, wherever they go. The organization engages students by raising awareness of community needs, encouraging discussion about potential solutions and barriers, and connecting students to ongoing efforts and opportunities for involvement. It creates space for students to explore how their interests, skills, and academic backgrounds may relate to community challenges, while bringing students together across colleges and programs around solving them. It facilitates opportunities for students to network and learn about organizations across disciplines and sectors that are involved in local public and/or community service, and potential opportunities for students to gain volunteer and/or professional experience. To supplement experiential learning about leading and sustaining community change, CAN provides opportunities for students to interact with and learn from organizations engaged in community impact initiatives across public, private and nonprofit sectors. It will also expose students to scholarship on collective impact and sustainable solutions in blended-capital ecosystems, guided by UF expertise. Overall, CAN functions as a bridge between the student body and the community, helping members become more informed, connected, and capable participants in addressing real-world challenges.
