ONWARD is a first-year student organization built on the belief that students should actively shape their college experience rather than simply participate in one created for them. Our organization provides first-year students with a community where they can explore new interests, develop personally, form meaningful connections, and gain confidence navigating the University of Florida while taking an active role in building the experiences they want to have. Unlike organizations centered primarily around predetermined programming, ONWARD is driven directly by its members. Members are encouraged to develop, plan, and host their own events, activities, and “side quests” based on what they want to experience, learn, or share with others. These may range from exploring Gainesville and trying new activities to service projects, recreational events, skill-sharing, personal development opportunities, and spontaneous group experiences. Members have the opportunity to turn an idea into an experience for the entire community, allowing them to practice initiative, collaboration, communication, creativity, and leadership in an approachable environment. ONWARD also helps first-year students build connections beyond the organization by introducing them to upperclassmen, student leaders, campus resources, organizations, and potential mentors who align with their interests and goals. Rather than assigning every student the same path, we aim to help members identify the people, experiences, and opportunities that can support the direction they choose for themselves. Through active membership, peer-led experiences, mentorship, and exploration, ONWARD gives first-year students the space to learn by doing. Members are not simply attendees, they are contributors who help determine what the organization becomes. In doing so, ONWARD aims to help students develop a greater sense of independence, belonging, and ownership over their college experience from the very beginning.
