The Greta Challen Berg Opera Aria Competition celebrates the power of the operatic voice and the legacy of one of Jacksonville’s early champions of music and the arts. Student finalists, selected by the UNF Voice Faculty through an earlier closed round, take the stage for a public final-round concert, performing beloved opera arias before three distinguished visiting judges. The competition honors Greta Challen Berg, a celebrated vocalist, opera singer, teacher, and longtime advocate for the arts who played an important role in the development of Jacksonville’s musical community and was one of the original incorporators of the Jacksonville Symphony Association. An accomplished dramatic soprano, Greta studied music in Italy and Paris before performing throughout the United States and internationally. She was also a dedicated educator and supporter of emerging artists, reflecting a lifelong belief in the importance of music, education, and opportunity. Through this annual competition, her legacy continues by giving talented young vocalists the opportunity to perform, compete, and share their artistry with the community. Experience an evening of exceptional operatic singing and celebrate the next generation of classical vocalists at the University of North Florida. Free and open to the public.
