The Kappa Sigma Fraternity has an illustrious six hundred year history with its inception in the Italian city of Bologna as a secret society of brothers. Five disciples of the renowned scholar Manuel Chrysoloras sought protection from the tyranny of Baldassare Cossa. The Order of Kappa Sigma made its way to America when, on December 10th 1869, five students at the University of Virginia met at 46 East Lawn to draft the first constitution of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. William Grigsby McCormick, George Miles Arnold, Edmund Law Rogers Jr., John Covert Boyd and Frank Courtney Nicodemus established the Order based on the traditions of Bologna. Today the Kappa Sigma fraternity is proud to have 316 chapters and colonies and over 17000 active members as well as over 200.000 living initiates. The Epsilon-Beta Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity was founded in 1939 at the University of Miami and was the first fraternity at the University of Miami. It was refounded as a colony at the University of Miami on March 1, 2025.
