UPup is an undergraduate student organization at the University of Miami that is centered on service dog raising, training, and awareness. We work with puppies provided by Canine Companions and Dogs, Inc – non-profit organizations that enhance the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs at no charge to the recipient. Some UPup members are volunteer puppy raisers with these organizations, and UPup is a community of students and faculty advisors around these raiser/puppy teams to provide support and to promote UPup’s mission. We also serve the community through our work with certified therapy dogs and educate the community through outreach events. Our goals are to properly train Canine Companions and Dogs, Inc. puppies for success in advanced training and as matched assistance dogs, to teach students training techniques, and to spread awareness about animal policy on campus.
